Special Programs at SCDSB

At the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB), international students can explore more than standard academic courses. We offer special programs that connect classroom learning to real-world experiences. These programs help students build skills, discover career interests, and prepare for future studies or work.

Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM)

The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is available to students in Grades 11 and 12. It allows students to focus their studies on a specific career area while still completing the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

  • Choose from sectors such as Agriculture, Arts & Culture, Business, Construction, Environment, Health & Wellness, Hospitality and Tourism, Information & Communication Technology, Sports, and Transportation
  • Complete a bundle of 8–10 courses related to the sector.
  • Gain industry certifications (for example: First Aid/CPR, WHMIS).
  • Take part in hands-on experiences, co-op placements, and field trips to colleges, universities, and workplaces.
  • Graduates of SHSM receive a special red seal on their diploma to show future schools and employers their area of focus.

Technology Education

SCDSB has strong programs in technology and skilled trades. Students learn in modern classrooms and labs designed for hands-on learning.

  • Programs include Communications Technology, Computer Technology, Construction Technology, Green Industries, Hairstyling and Aesthetics, Health Care, Hospitality and Tourism, Manufacturing Technology, Technological Design, and Transportation Technology.
  • Students work with industry-standard tools and equipment.
  • Opportunities are available to connect technology courses with SHSM, co-op, and apprenticeship pathways.
  • Many SCDSB students compete — and succeed — in Skills Ontario competitions, showing their strength in technical fields.

Cooperative Education (Co-op)

Co-op gives students the chance to earn high school credits while working in a real Canadian workplace.

  • Placements can be in fields such as healthcare, business, technology, trades, and more.
  • Students gain practical skills, Canadian work experience, and professional references.
  • Co-op can also connect with SHSM programs and apprenticeships, helping students prepare for college, university, or careers.

Why These Programs Matter

These special programs give international students:

  • Practical skills that prepare them for life after high school.
  • Experience in Canadian workplaces and industries.
  • Stronger applications for college and university.
  • A chance to discover passions and career directions while studying in Ontario.
