Orientation

Helping Students Feel Ready

We want every international student to feel confident before they arrive and supported when they begin school in Simcoe County. That’s why our orientation includes both an online pre-arrival orientation and an in-person orientation after arrival. Together, these experiences help students adjust to life in Canada and feel part of the school community.

Pre-Arrival Orientation (Online)

Before students travel to Canada, they are invited to join an online orientation session. This session helps students and families prepare for the journey ahead and understand what to expect.

Topics include:

  • Introduction to the Simcoe County District School Board International Student Program
  • What to pack and travel planning tips
  • Overview of school life and daily routines in Canada
  • Advice for adapting to Canadian culture and climate

In-Person Orientation (Post-Arrival)

When students arrive in Simcoe County, they take part in an in-person orientation hosted by our International Student Program team. This fun and interactive event helps students settle in, meet new people, and explore their new surroundings.

Activities include:

  • A warm welcome from SCDSB staff
  • School tours to get familiar with classrooms, libraries, cafeterias, and gyms
  • Meetings with guidance counsellors and international student support staff
  • Information sessions about courses, timetables, and academic expectations
  • Orientation Excursion: A special group trip to a local attraction or a cultural site. This fun day helps students bond with new friends, experience Canadian life, and start their adventure with lasting memories.

Why Orientation Matters

  • Students begin with confidence, friendships, and practical knowledge
  • Parents and agents can feel reassured that students are supported and safe
  • Everyone starts the school year feeling connected and prepared
