Become a Host Family
Open your home—and your heart—to an international student. The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) partners with Canada Homestay Network (CHN) to match local families with students who come to study in our communities. Hosting is safe, well-supported, and deeply rewarding.
Why host?
- Make a difference: Help a young person feel at home in Canada.
- Cultural exchange: Share daily life and learn about another culture.
- Ongoing support: CHN provides guidance and 24/7 assistance for hosts.
- Allowance: Hosts receive a monthly allowance to help offset household costs.

- Healthy meals each day
- Inclusion in family routines and activities

- Respect for student safety, wellbeing, and program rules
Safety first: screening & onboarding
CHN carefully screens and supports every host family. Typical steps include:
- Online application
- Interview and home visit
- Background checks for all household members 18+ (e.g., Police Record Check; Vulnerable Sector check if hosting minors)
- References
- Orientation and ongoing check-ins once you begin hosting
How CHN supports you

Who can host?
Hosts come from many backgrounds—families with children, empty-nesters, couples, and singles. What matters is a safe, caring home, time to support a student, and a willingness to follow CHN’s policies and screening process.
Time commitment
Hosting opportunities vary by program and school calendar (short-term or full academic year). CHN matches students and hosts based on needs, interests, and location; placements are confirmed when a suitable match is found.
